چکیده

Observations of microwave backscatter from shoaling and breaking surface waves acquired with a shore-based, coherent-on-receive X-band marine radar are presented. The was located at the dune cliff sandy beach two breaker bars. Waves were approximately shore-normal (inclination < 10°) during study period. Consistent other studies, intensity is significantly increased ( $\approx 10$ dB compared to nonbreaking) Doppler velocities close wave phase velocity in shallow water. strong active breakers can cause significant amount signal artifacts due leakage pulse energy into adjacent range cells, particular behind crests. In near range, undisturbed such smearing appear as distinct peaks inside spectra. Thus, both sources scatterering be retrieved using dedicated peak separation algorithm. far notation="LaTeX">$r > 500$ m), dominate Therefore, when investigating spatio-temporal evolution wave-induced radar, analysis should restricted crests well-illuminated front faces waves. spectra tracked along crest an exemplary individual extracted steepening, active- post-breaking stage.

Direct Observations of Coherent Backscatter of Radar Waves in Precipitation

In previous work, it was argued that a source of radar coherent scatter occurs in the direction perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation because of the presence of grids of enhanced particle concentrations with spatial periodicities in resonance with the radar wavelength. While convincing, the evidence thus far has been indirect. In this work the authors now present direct observation...

Surf Zone Wave Breaking Identification Using Marine Radar

This paper presents a novel combination of synchronous, large coverage marine radar, calibrated pulsed Doppler radar, and video remote sensing observations from a nearshore field site. The data enable the analysis of the evolution and characteristics of the remotely observed signals from surf zone waves. The combination of different remote sensors allows a better discrimination between breaking...

The overall long-term goal for this project is to determine if and how acoustic coherent backscatter enhancement (ACBE) can be used for classification of active sonar returns in a wide variety of ocean environments. During its first twenty months, this project has focused on simulations of acoustic multiple scattering from aggregations of omni-directional point scatterers to determine the param...

Acoustic Coherent Backscatter Enhancement from Aggregations of Marine Animals

The overall long-term goal for this project is to determine if and how acoustic coherent backscatter enhancement (ACBE) can be used for classification of active sonar returns in a wide variety of ocean environments. During its first eight months, this project has focused on elementary simulations of acoustic multiple scattering from aggregations of omni-directional scatterers to determine the p...
